The Western Ends Trail

Efter att ha gjort den uppmärksammade kortfilmen “Where’s Anton” 2013 hade Joe DeNardo inget annat val än att fortsätta samarbeta med sina vänner i det LA-baserade bandet Gun Outfit (Carrie Keith, Dylan Sharp och Daniel Swire). Varje besök västerut innebar nya filmexperiment, som tog spjärn mot det gemensamma intresset i ett nytt projekt: mindre dokumentärt, mer ren fiktion! Nu utvidgades projektet utöver bandmedlemmarna och Joe till deras gemensamma vän Nicoletta Beyer och ibland även fotograferna Joanne Kim och Eugene Ahn. Mindre strukturerade och mindre regisserade äventyr i Kaliforniens vildmark och bland heta källor i öknen gav improviserade och spännande resultat. Med tiden skrevs ett manus av Dylan Sharp, som i ett långfilmsformat avskaffade alla karaktärer och teman. Detta kunde sedan trattas ner till mer fokuserade delar; verket cirkulerar kring mötet mellan musik och westernbilder, svek och kontroll, stråkar och power noir. Titelns ”Trail” betyder här den ändlösa resan; en korsning som uppstår i vägen på en oändlig resa. Nästa steg har ännu inte beslutats. Hur kommer det att sluta? Vart ska vi ta vägen?

Just like before, in powerless watching and powerful witness; in layers of vision, peeled back to an edifice of mineral sound; in the minds of those who will it to be.

This is a film that hears footsteps and turns backward; who's there? It's nothing, just soft whispers weirdly echoing through a familiar alien landscape. It's the story of Caroline and color reversal - and of Tice, the killer of tails. Follow Don, the magic employee; hear Willard's oblivious throat! Who is the Sheriff, and who will be turned on? How deeply can HP slide into the ambiguous groove? The Western Ends is a crude glyph in 16mm. It's a decentralized directorial effort, a horizontal exploration of crumbling themes, an old fashioned story of human limits. It's a picture of mountains, an erasing of the map. This is the work of the sinister eye - who is watching who?"
